According to the Bureau of Labor and Statistics, the top five fastest growing occupations in technology are:
1. Information Security Analyst
As hackers continue to create havoc for companies, the job of an information security analyst is becoming increasingly important. They protect an organization's computer network and systems through planning and carrying out specialized security measures. With a median salary of $86,170, the projected job growth rate from 2012 to 2022 is 37%, which is much faster than the average rate of 11%.
2. Computer Systems Analyst
The job growth rate for computer systems analysts is 25%. From 2012 to 2022 there will be 127,700 jobs added in the field. Computer systems analysts work to connect an organization's business and IT teams to develop solutions for the company to operate more efficiently and effectively.
3. Software Developer
Software developers are the "creative minds behind the computer programs," developing applications that allow users to do specific tasks on a device or computer. The job growth rate is 22% from 2012 to 22, and the median salary is $93,350. A bachelor's degree is usually required for an entry-level position.
4. Web Developer
Web developers are the designers and creators of websites. Not only do they design websites, they also are responsible for the technical aspects, such as performance and speed. Web developers can choose to be self-employed or work for an organization. About a quarter of web developers were self-employed in 2012. The BLS projects a growth rate of 20% through 2022.
5. Computer Support Specialist
Computer support specialists are an integral part in helping to keep an organization's technology up to par. They support IT employees or assist non-IT employees who are having computer problems. Some positions require an Associate's Degree while others may require a Bachelor's Degree. The projected job growth rate is 17%, adding 123,000 jobs through 2022.
