Recently, I traveled to New York to celebrate a milestone – the big 5-0! I’d booked a hotel in Soho after what I thought was thorough research. The rooms looked nice, the rate was fair, and the location was ideal. The hotel seemed to strike the right balance of sophistication, making it a comfortable stay for both my wife and kids. But when we arrived, our expectations hit a wall – literally, at the lobby entrance.

With far too many bags in hand, I discovered the hotel was self-service. No valet. No bellhops. And when I asked for a luggage cart, I was told by another guest, “good luck finding one,” as they were often stashed somewhere by guests with no centralized coordination. As I lugged our bags up to the room (the hallway, since the room keys didn’t work on the first try), I realized how much we value service. It wasn’t just about a nice room; it was about the experience of feeling taken care of. Despite its appeal on paper, the stay continued to reveal the hidden challenges of an autonomous, do-it-yourself setup.
