Perspectives on HRMAC Summit

Advanced Resources is proud to be an active member of the Human Resources Management Association of Chicago (HRMAC). We were once again an exhibitor at their annual Summit, which was held yesterday at the Donald A. Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont. We chatted about the show with our own Liz Bright, Managing Director.

Liz - what was the hot topic at the show – what was everyone talking about?  Everyone was chatting about the opening keynote speaker, Adam Grant. He is a professor for Wharton’s MBA program and he is the author of “Give and Take: A Revolutionary Approach to Success.” Malcolm Gladwell recently identified Adam as one of his favorite social science writers and called his work “brilliant.”

He discussed 3 different styles: Givers, Takers and Matchers - givers are typically the best performers and takers are most often the worst. He also talked about how by conducting more situational interviews vs behavioral you can prevent hiring takers. He highlighted how hiring takers prevents collaboration and sharing in your environment, which can create an overall sense of paranoia.

Adam stressed that to be effective in teams and service relationships employees need skills in building networks, collaborating, talent management, persuasion, and negotiating. He talked about redefining “giving” … for instance, doing more 5 minute favors. 90% of giving comes from someone who is asking for help … the “Reciprocity Ring.” Finally, he emphasized ways to gather a group of people together and share information to build better teams.

Did attendance seem to be up or down this year? How was the crowd? The crowd – as always - was terrific! The event flowed very well and there was a fantastic amount of networking and quality conversations.

What value did Advanced Resources get out of the show?  We always enjoy HRMAC because we see so many of our valued clients at this event. We have the chance to share our best practices and to discuss the future of HR. Finally, we had the opportunity to invite many people to our upcoming Thought Leadership Event, “ACA: The Employer Mandate.” There is tremendous buzz about ACA and the implications for employers.

Any additional comments? Overall it was en energetic day! The audience seems positive, engaged and excited to be working together to continue to building our HR profession together. Thank you HRMAC for continuing to host such a fantastic event!
