Tips for Engaging Talent

At Advanced Resources, we get paid to help our clients build their teams through better talent. To do this, we need to be masters at recruiting, and we need to provide exceptional opportunities and experiences for talented professionals. Our job, however, doesn’t stop with filling positions. Our goal is success for clients and candidates – for instance, we want to help clients maximize their “ROI” from their talent. One important strategy for doing so is currently a hot topic in the HR community: Employee Engagement.

Advanced is entering into a new partnership in 2013 with SilkRoad. SilkRoad is a social talent management company and we will be using WingSpan, their performance management and development planning tool. We think effective reviews and talent discussions are critical for engaging our workforce. SilkRoad recently published a great list of “9 Ways to Take Your Employees Further in 2013.” Here are some of our favorite tips from this list:

Do talent reviews for everyone. Don’t just do them for your high potentials, set at least one meaningful development opportunity for everyone. This is different than performance appraisals. Find experiences, assignments, projects that will help your employees grow.

Enable employees to learn from each other. Casual lunch and learns are a great example. Get employees together and have them share their own best practices. The best ideas often come from the front lines!

Kill the old stuff. Have programs that have seen better days? Kill them. Make room for new ideas and new programs. Get rid of the old, uncool stuff and do new, cool stuff.

Tap the fountain of wellness. Wellness initiatives are good for your employees AND they save your company money. Create programs that your employees can get enthused about. Make participation fun.

Ask employees what they need. You don’t need surveys or focus groups. Just talk to people. Ask people what they need in casual every day chats and you will gain valuable insight.
